OFFENBACH: ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD EUGENE PREMIERE Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, 7.30 evening followed by New Year's Eve Gala Saturday, Jan 3, 2009, 2.30 matinee |
The Opera:
Celebrity couples on the 'outs'? Famous politicians doing things they shouldn't? These things have been around since the Greeks! Offenbach's sparkling masterpiece ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD turns familiar tales upside down and shows that today's scandals are nothing new! The action stretches from Mt. Olympus to the underworld; in the end everyone parties like it's
1858 to the
sounds of the famous "Can Can."
The Production: ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD, sung in English, features a high energy cast headed by Christiane Noll, returning after her triumphs in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE and THE ART OF THE AMERICAN DIVA. Joining her is baritone Douglas Webster as Pluto, Eugene favorite Sandy Naishtat as Jupiter and exciting young soprano Joelle Harvey as the saucy Cupid. The entire cast will be led by conductor Andrew Bisantz of the Florida Grand Opera.
The Music: ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD is filled with delightful melodies that enchant the ear of young and old alike. Offenbach's music embodies the high spirits and sophistication of "gay Paree," culminating in the famous "Can Can." It's like musical champagne!
