MAGIC FLUTE--Dies Bildnis

The Opera: The Magic Flute, Mozart's beloved masterpiece tells the journey of the young prince Tamino, recruited
by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the clutches of the (supposedly) wicked Sarastro.
As Tamino braves many trials to find the truth, accompanied in his travels by the strange and comical Papageno,
he finds out that nothing in his world is as it was first presented.

The Production: Eugene Opera's production The Magic Flute will be sung in German with English dialogue.
Nicholas Carthy, returning from his critical triumph in The Pirates of Penzance, conducts an international cast of
exciting young singers, including the Australian bass Steven Gallop (winner of the Joan Sutherland award) as
Sarastro, American tenor Peter Sovitzky as Tamino, South African soprano Bronwyn Forbay as the Queen of the
Night, Korean soprano Eun Hee Kim (winner of Eugene Opera's first Belle Voci competition) as Pamina, and the
American baritone Andrew Wilkowske (an audience and critical favorite as Major-General Stanley) as Papageno.

The Music: From its very first moments, the music of THE MAGIC FLUTE is a charming mixture of joy and solemnity.
The official name of this type of work is “Singspiel,” which is a popular German art form that combines singing and
spoken dialogue. Thus, Mozart's miraculous music is presented in a way that delights both connoisseurs and
first-time operagoer of all ages.
