Mark Beudert - Artistic Director

The American tenor Mark Beudert first gained recognition while an undergraduate student at Columbia University in New York City. His last-minute substitution as Frederic in the New York Shakespeare Festival's famed production of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE opposite Kevin Kline earned him laudatory notices throughout the United States.

After intensive study with Franco Corelli, (including study with Placido Domingo and Giuseppe di Stefano), Mr. Beudert won the Luciano Pavarotti Concorso Internazionale in 1986. He made critically acclaimed debuts that year at the Washington Opera (as Nerone in L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA, Nicholas McGegan conducting) and at New York City Opera, where he has sung such roles as Alfredo in LA TRAVIATA, and the title roles in CANDIDE and THE STUDENT PRINCE, both in New York City and on tour in China. He made his international debut with The Lyric Opera of Queensland, scoring a personal success as Lt. Pinkerton in MADAMA BUTTERFLY opposite Jane Eaglen. He created the title role in the Scottish Opera's production of CANDIDE, directed by Jonathan Miller, in the last staged version of this work supervised by Leonard Bernstein. This production later went to London's Old Vic Theater, where it won a number of Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Production. He later returned to Scottish Opera for the role of Sam Ka plan in the UK premiere, of Kurt Weill's STREET SCENE, in a production by David Poutney, and his English National Opera debut in this role and production. In 1990, Mr. Beudert commenced studies leading to a doctoral degree in Music at the University of Michigan, under the direction of the distinguished African-American tenor George Shirley. He continued his performing career during this time, appearing internationally in opera, oratorio, and on the concert stage. Highlights of this period include TOSCA and LA FAVORITA with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the title role in Haydn's LO SPEZIALE with the Cleveland Orchestra, and the title role of Gounod's FAUST in Australia.

In 1996, he received his A. Mus Doc. degree, and since then has concentrated on both performance and teaching. Performance highlights during this time included EVGENII ONEGIN and MADAMA BUTTERFLY in Ireland, the Portuguese premieres of CANDIDE and STREET SCENE in Portugal, and the first performance of STREET SCENE in Italy, at the Teatro Regio in Turin, along with concert appearances in Europe and the United States. Recent appearances include the world premiere of Johanna Doderer's DIE FREMDE in Vienna, the Verdi's REQUIEM at the Oregon Bach Festival under the direction of Helmut Rilling, and performances of Ades' POWDER HER FACE in Rome, Zurich, Paris, and at the Teatro San Carlo, Napoli.

Mr. Beudert lives with his wife, Jennifer, a specialist in early childhood education, and their three children, Katie, Sarah, and Nicholas, in Oregon, South Bend IN, and New York. In addition to performing, he served as the Director of the Bel Canto Northwest Vocal Institute at Portland (OR) State University from 2002-2006, where he oversaw innovative productions of repertoire extending from Handel's GIULIO CESARE IN EGITTO to Stravinski's THE RAKES PROGRESS. Bel Canto's production of Weill's DOWN IN THE VALLEY and Hindemith's HIN UND ZURUECK recently acheived acclaim at the Kurt-Weill Festival in Dessau, Germany. He currently serves as Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of Notre Dame, where he has directed Offenbach's ORPHEE AUX ENFERS and Britten's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, and Artistic Advisor for Eugene (OR) Opera, where he has directed new productions of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE and this season's DIE ZAUBERFLOETE.

He currently serves as Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of Notre Dame, where he has directed Offenbach's ORPHEE AUX ENFERS, Britten's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, and a reconstruction of the original version of Gounod's FAUST. His research focuses on the Philosophy of Performance, and he is overseeing the institution of an Interdisciplinary degree in Opera Studies. He is also Artistic Director for Eugene (OR) Opera, where he has directed new productions of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE and DIE ZAUBERFLOETE.

During the 2008-09 season, he will direct a new production of Offenbach's ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD.
